New Board Member Enjoying Her New Role
By Kathy Heigle
I grew up in the greater Cleveland area and, like most Clevelanders, have always felt a strong responsibility to give back to this great city. In my younger years “giving back” meant writing a check or two to various charities and for a while it was enough for me. Somewhere in the last few years, though, I began to wonder exactly how the funds I donated were being used and, more importantly, how much my particular skills, energy, and time could multiply the value of those funds to an organization. I decided to find out. Business Volunteers Unlimited told me about the great work Joseph’s Home does for men and families in the community. I wanted to help. After several interviews with board members, I felt honored to be asked to join the organization.
Serving on the board of Joseph’s Home is a rewarding experience. Not only do I get to advise and see that funds are appropriated responsibly and efficiently, but I see first hand how this noble organization touches men’s lives. Every man who comes through the door is treated like family. No matter what type of help he needs each member is given a set of goals and the support necessary to achieve them. During their stay, the caring staff works with the men to educate them on the tools available in the community that will assist them when they leave the home.
What sets Joseph’s Home apart from other similar organizations is the ongoing care the men receive. Many former residents come back to the home to visit staff members that have become friends, attend fundraisers, or spread the word to other men that Joseph’s Home can change their lives. All who leave do so with the understanding that they can call upon the staff even after they return to their lives away from the home.
It is my sincere desire to help Joseph’s Home shine light where it is needed. Our future is bright.
