JH Garden
In 2009 Joseph’s Home was selected by the Gardeners of America Garden Club as a site for the creation of a garden. The members of the Garden Club met with Joseph’s Home staff and residents to develop plans for the garden. Residents were also provided with tickets to the Cleveland Botanical Garden for a field trip.

Ongoing programs in which residents and alumni participate include:

  • The Wellness Support Program which provides on-site mental health services such as individual and group counseling
  • Life Skills groups provided by Catholic Charities
  • Financial skills education provided by PNC Bank
  • Nutritional Education classes by Ohio State Extension Program
  • Alumni Board and Continuity of Care Program

PNC Helps Residents & Alumni Find the Path to Financial Freedom

The path to financial freedom can be bumpy for anyone, but it can be especially challenging for men who have experienced illness and homelessness. In September 2014, Collette Appolito and Saul Ramos of PNC Bank helped Joseph’s Home residents and alumni better navigate that path through a financial literacy workshop called Money Matters.

The workshop covered basic but vital principles of personal finance, such as budgeting, saving, credit management, cost-cutting and goal-setting.

Appolito and Ramos proved that financial literacy training could be anything but dry and uninteresting. The discussions were lively as Appolito, executive director of PNC’s Fairfax Connection community center and Ramos, vice president, community consultant in PNC’s Community Development Banking department, used anecdotes from their own lives and dealt frankly with issues everyone faces regardless of income level.

Many thanks to PNC Bank for helping empower the men of Joseph’s Home for financial success.

Editor’s note: It is with heavy hearts that we report Saul Ramos passed away only a month after conducting the workshop. Our deepest sympathies to Saul’s family, friends and colleagues. His kindness and genuine concern for others made a lasting impression on all who took part in the workshop.
